How does poor wellbeing affect organisations?

Our host Chris and LACE consultant Evan Wynne are joined by Deirdre O’Shea who is the Associate Professor of Work and Organisational Psychology at the University of Limerick. She has come onto the podcast to give an academic perspective on the state of wellbeing and how this is impacting organisations.

We ask for her perspective on a series of questions, including:

  • In terms of wellbeing, what does science say, and how this is affecting organisations? How does this related to what you are seeing in organisations today?
  • How can organisations contribute to wellbeing rather than just ‘ticking a box’?
  • What are some ways that organisations can determine when to use wellbeing interventions and which to use?
  • Should wellbeing be embedded in the culture of the organisation?
  • What is the role of the manager and leadership in terms of employee wellbeing? How do you provide them with the capability to address employee wellbeing?
  • Should businesses focus on workforce wellbeing, what would be the societal impact, if any?

Many organisations are putting a lot more emphasis on their employees’ mental health, but should organisations be thinking more holistically in terms of employee wellbeing? Listen now to hear Deidre explain what she meant by the ‘misapplication of wellbeing’ that some organisations are creating.

Mental health is a crucial component to an employee’s engagement and productivity both inside and outside the workplace. Which is OK Positive is an app which provides an early warning system that helps managers identify mental health issues in the workplace. Furthermore, he provides his perspective on organisations making wellbeing a “tick box” exercise as well as some examples of organisations doing it right and wrong.
